Powerball Lotto winners: Syndicate from Curves gym in Beldon reveal moment they discovered they’d won $80m
Screams, tears and pure joy filled the room of a gym this morning after a group of 54 women found out they were millionaires.
The small Curves gym in the northern suburb of Beldon was noisy with laughter, cheers and disbelief as the group of lucky winners congregated to celebrate their new fortune after winning $80 million — WA’s largest lottery prize — on Thursday night.
The syndicate included 54 women from the ages of 17-84 years old whose lives are now changed forever.
Sue, who owns the gym and was the woman who bought the lucky ticket, said she was still “in shock and couldn’t believe it”.
“This is so life-changing, not just for us but for our families. It’s going to change so many people’s lives,” she said, becoming emotional.
“I was with the girls last night before the lotto was drawn, and I said ‘$80 million is too much for one person, whoever wins it needs to share it.’ And lo and behold that was us, we won.
“Not just one person, but 54 of us. I can’t believe it, I’m shaking.”
The group of women were at their Curves Christmas party last night when they received the life-changing call.
There were “screams and just a lot of jumping and crying” the moment they realised they were millionaires.
“Some of our realists in the group didn’t believe it and stayed seated. And the rest of us were just jumping and screaming. We couldn’t help it,” she said.
Another lucky winner, Jodie, said she has been renting for the past 17 years and this money would help her buy her dream home.
“I have some health issues and my partner had a heart attack in April this year,’ she said.
“This is amazing, just life-changing. I’m stoked and it’s right before Christmas — I’m just so excited.
“Best $5 investment ever.”
Jodie said she was on a weight loss journey but would not be training today.
The husband to a lucky winner said he was the one to call the group of women and tell them that they’d won late on Thursday night.
Colin said it was a “struggle” to get the women to believe him, but when they realised he couldn’t hear past their “screams of joy”.
“I got the ticket and did the first couple of numbers, and on the last line I saw we had all of them and the powerball,” Colin said.
“I thought no way, so I rang my wife Jenny and told her and she said ‘bulls..t no we didn’t’.
“So then I rang Sue who organises it and said you need to check the ticket. And she rang LotteryWest and they confirmed it.”
Another lucky winner who didn’t want to be named said she “didn’t sleep a wink last night” and was still drinking champagne until the early hours of this morning.
